Thailand is launching a Quarantine Yacht for Travelers

Visitors to Thailand are now able to enjoy their obligatory two-week on a coronavirus quarantine yacht. The government hopes that the latest project would add 1.8 billion baht (£42m, $58m) in yacht tourism revenue.

The step aims to revive the country’s stagnant tourism industry, which the pandemic has hard hit. Previously, in January, the nation proposed a scheme to encourage tourists to spend their quarantine on a golf course.

The SouthEast Asian nation depends heavily on tourism, but they were barred from transmitting the virus last year.

Announced on Monday, the Yacht Quarantine Policy would encourage tourists with a negative coronavirus test to spend their time on a yacht or small cruise ship in Phuket.

The pandemic saw the number of visitors in the iconic tourist destination plunge from 40,000-50,000 a day to just a hundred.

The Thai government’s Digital Economy Promotion Agency (DEPA) declared the Yacht Quarantine Policy on Monday.

The software has already started to welcome yachts for a trial run, and over 100 yachts are planned to take part once they get off the ground.

Travelers are expected to wear a smart wristband that measures vital signs, including temperature and blood pressure, and tracks the wearer’s location using GPS.

The computer will relay information even at sea within a distance of 10 km, the government said.

Since October, Thailand, which banned international tourism in March last year, has been steadily reopening its borders. Last week, Thailand’s tourism minister said that he would propose a quarantine scheme for foreigners in typical tourist areas, including beach resorts.

The hotel quarantine plan is scheduled to begin in April or May in the famous provinces of Phuket, Krabi, and Chiang Mai.
