Environmental conservation has never been more critical than today, and India’s Lahaul-Spiti administration is now working on a green tax. The idea is to impose this compensation on visitors coming to the region by collecting green tax in Lahaul. The administration has already sent the proposal to the state’s government (Himachal Pradesh) and is waiting for a green light.
Lahaul Green Tax will be used for cleaning, greenery, and its village development.
Lahaul is one of the most important tourist destinations in Himachal Pradesh, and every year the number of tourists arrives. This causes some degree of difficulty as the fragile terrain is affected. Littering, sound, and air pollution are some of the disadvantages of being a popular tourist destination. But a place like Lahaul-Spiti, because of its sensitive ecology, cannot afford to have that. With the introduction of green taxes, the district administration hopes to heal the environment and develop.
The administration is already working on solid waste management. It is intended to give jute bags to tourists entering the valley, where their trash is expected to be stored. These trash bags can then be disposed of in designated areas.
According to Lahaul-Spiti Deputy Commissioner Pankaj Rai, “The proposal to impose a green cessation has been forwarded to the state government. We are working on providing Keylong with water 24 hours a day on a pilot project. The facility will be provided in a phased manner in other areas.”
Well, this is just another one to add among many on the list from the Indian Government. And we won’t be complaining either as long as it is used for the sole purpose of which it’s been implied upon the visitors.
