Hikers in Hawaii, watch out for the new rules! As reported, those found hiking in areas beyond Closed or No Trespassing signs may have to bear a financial burden if they get into trouble and need to be rescued.
Hawaii is a hiking paradise, and there are inherent risks along scenic trails, such as falling debris, flash floods, hazardous cliffs, among other hazards. As per the reports, it has been found that many people are still on the trail, despite the signage that some areas are closed, and eventually find themselves in dangerous situations.
It is reported that the proposed bill will be implemented to emphasize the importance of warnings and that bill will require such irresponsible hikers to pay for their own rescues.
Referring to the bill, State Sen. J. Kalani English, who is one of the bill’s primary sponsors, stated that the bill was proposed to ensure the safety of locals and tourists. He added that it was one of the bills that seemed challenging but made a lot of sense at the end of the day.
According to the bill, which is called S.B. No. 700, “When a government entity engages in a search or rescue operation to search or rescue a person and incurs search and rescue expenses therein, the government entity may seek reimbursement” in cases where “the need for search or rescue was caused by any act or omission by the person searched or rescued, constituting an intentional dissertation.
Reimbursements are likely to be required by the person himself or by anyone responsible for putting them at risk or by those who are the guardians, custodians, or any other entity responsible for their safety.
This is strict but needful initiative from Hawaii to ensure safety among the hikers.
